Who can foster?
Most people can foster. Fostering can fit flexibly around you, your family and your career. Fostering is an inclusive role - you don't need any specific qualifications to start with. Training is provided before you start and continues once you're approved.
Different types of foster carer are needed. You can be a foster carer if you:
- Are over 21 (there is no upper age limit)
- Have a spare bedroom (not always necessary if you foster babies)
- Have one weekend a month to give (for respite careing roles)
- Can be available if a school-age child is off sick from school
Fostering is for everyone
Almost anyone can be a foster parent. Applicants are welcome whether you're single or in a relationship, if you rent or own your home. Most pet-loving homes are welcome too.
Your own children may be living at home, that is fine! Social workers from your local council will work with you and help you all to understand what fostering is, and how your family can make a difference to another child's life.
You don't need any qualifications to start with, training will be provided. A driving licence is not essential, but it is handy in some areas. Depending on the type of foster care you choose, some carers continue working another job too.
Being able to speak and write in English is essential. You need strong communication skills to work with your foster child's community, including school staff, medical professionals, birth families and the council's team of social workers.
What age children could you foster?
Some foster carers specialise in babies, some toddlers and some with older children. Some foster carers only offer care at the weekend or in the school holidays. Some foster carers can look after more than one child and can take small family groups. Some foster carers can look after children with special educational needs or physical disabilities.
To be a foster carer, you need to be ready to nurture a child whose life has been disrupted. This takes time, patience and kindness.
